The Role of Physical Activity in Improving Mental Health: A Review
Author(s): Himanshi
Abstract:
Physical activity is recognized as one of the most effective non-pharmacological approaches for improving mental health and psychological well-being. Regular participation in physical activity has been associated with reduced symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress, and emotional disorders while enhancing self-esteem, cognitive function, resilience, and overall quality of life. The purpose of this review paper is to examine the relationship between physical activity and mental health by reviewing previous research findings. The review discusses the physiological and psychological mechanisms through which physical activity improves mental well-being, including the release of endorphins, regulation of neurotransmitters, improved sleep quality, and enhanced social interaction. Furthermore, the paper explores the role of different forms of exercise such as aerobic exercise, resistance training, yoga, and recreational sports in promoting mental health among children, adolescents, adults, and older adults. Evidence from previous studies consistently indicates that regular physical activity significantly improves psychological well-being and reduces the prevalence of common mental disorders. The review concludes that physical activity should be considered an essential component of public health strategies and mental health interventions.
