Author(s): Himanshi
Abstract:
Sports psychology has emerged as one of the most important disciplines in sports science because it focuses on the mental and emotional aspects of athletic performance. While physical fitness, technical skills, and tactical knowledge are essential for success, psychological factors often determine whether an athlete can consistently perform at their best under pressure. The purpose of this review paper is to examine the role of sports psychology in enhancing athletic performance by synthesizing findings from previous research. The review discusses key psychological variables such as motivation, self-confidence, anxiety, stress management, mental toughness, attention, concentration, emotional regulation, goal setting, imagery, self-talk, and mindfulness. It also highlights the contribution of psychological skills training (PST) in improving performance, reducing competitive anxiety, and promoting athletes mental health and well-being. Studies published in peer-reviewed journals indicate that athletes who receive systematic psychological skills training demonstrate better consistency, resilience, and competitive success than those who rely solely on physical preparation. The review concludes that integrating sports psychology into coaching programs is essential for optimizing performance and ensuring long-term athlete development.
