Abstract:
Cotton is an important commercial crop that boosts agricultural production, the expansion of the textile sector and earnings from exports. This study examines the cottons performance in India, focusing on growth, variability, export performance and comparative advantage. The study examines trends in area, output, yield, and exports by using secondary data and statistical techniques such as the percentage approach, compound annual growth rate, average, standard deviation, coefficient of variation and Revealed Symmetric Comparative Advantage (RSCA). The findings demonstrate that cotton production and yield have shown a growth trend over the period of study while area expansion has been relatively moderate. Although cotton exports increased in absolute terms, their proportion in total agricultural exports trended downward over time. In comparison to the area, productivity and yield exhibit modest variability, according to the variability analysis. Despite some variations, the RSCA data indicate that India has maintained a steady comparative advantage in cotton exports during the period of the study. Overall, the findings indicate that India maintains its dominant position in the world cotton trade despite significant structural and market related challenges. The results suggest that in order to maintain Indias long-term comparative advantage in the cotton sector, governmental initiatives targeted at enhancing productivity stability and boosting export competitiveness are essential.
