The Impact of Physical Activity on Cognitive and Emotional Development in Children: A Comprehensive Review
Author(s): Kuldeep Nara
Abstract:
Physical activity plays a crucial role in promoting the holistic development of children, impacting not only their physical health but also cognitive abilities and emotional well-being. This review aims to synthesize existing literature on the relationship between physical activity and children’s cognitive and emotional development, focusing on studies published before 2018. The findings highlight that regular physical activity significantly enhances cognitive functions such as memory, attention, and problem-solving skills, while also fostering emotional resilience, reducing stress, and improving self-esteem. Neurophysiological mechanisms, including increased neuroplasticity and hormonal regulation, underpin these benefits. The review also identifies variations in outcomes based on activity type, frequency, and individual factors such as age and baseline fitness levels. Despite robust evidence supporting the benefits of physical activity, gaps remain regarding standardized assessment tools, longitudinal studies, and the influence of socio-environmental factors. These findings underscore the need for integrating structured physical activity programs into school curricula to optimize children’s cognitive and emotional development. This review offers actionable insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers to promote active lifestyles among children
