Evolving Identities: A Sociological Study of Scheduled Caste Transformations in Haryana
Author(s): Seema, Seema Sharma
Abstract:
This scoping review examines the evolving identity of Scheduled Castes (SCs) in Haryana, focusing on sociological aspects of caste identity changes. Despite legislative reforms and affirmative action, caste remains a significant factor in social dynamics, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. The review synthesizes literature on how SCs in Haryana experience shifts in caste identity, the role of socio-economic and educational policies, and the impact of socio-cultural factors. A systematic search of multiple databases, including Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed, was conducted using key terms such as “Scheduled Castes,” “caste identity,” “Haryana,” and “social mobility.” Studies published between 2000 and 2024 were selected based on empirical and theoretical contributions to the understanding of SC identity in the region. Data extraction focused on key themes including the socio-economic factors driving identity change, the influence of caste-based policies, and the cultural dimensions of identity negotiation. The results identified three central themes: 1) Institutional Drivers of Identity Change, highlighting the impact of educational and governmental policies, including the Deprived Scheduled Caste (DSC) classification; 2) Cultural and Social Transformations, exploring shifts in inter-caste relations, perceptions, and the emergence of new identity markers; and 3) Barriers and Challenges, addressing ongoing discrimination and stigma. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the factors influencing caste identity in Haryana, offering insights for future research and policy interventions aimed at fostering social equality and inclusion.
